# Lisbon to Faro Train: Crossing the Tagus to the Algarve Coast

Five times a day, a Comboios de Portugal train pulls out of Lisboa Oriente, crosses the Tagus on the 25 de Abril bridge, cuts south through the cork oak plains of the Alentejo, and rolls into Faro three hours later with the Ria Formosa lagoon already in view. It's the easiest way to reach the Algarve without a car.

## Quick Facts

- **Distance:** 278 km, Lisboa Oriente to Faro
- **Travel time:** ~3h on the Alfa Pendular, ~3h30 on Intercidades
- **Trains per day:** 5 direct departures each direction
- **Ticket prices:** $33-40 economy booked 2+ months out, up to $68-75 for business class

## The Journey, Stage by Stage

**Stage 1 — Crossing the Tagus.** Out of Lisboa Oriente, the train climbs onto the 25 de Abril Bridge, 70 metres above the Tagus estuary.

**Stage 2 — Into the Alentejo.** An hour and a half of cork oaks, wheat stubble and stork nests on every pylon.

**Stage 3 — Reaching Tunes.** The junction where the line splits: straight through for Faro, or change for Portimão and Lagos.

**Stage 4 — Faro and the Ria Formosa.** The final approach skirts the lagoon, home to flamingos, before arriving at Faro's old town.

## Route Map

Lisboa Oriente → Entrecampos → Pinhal Novo → Tunes (junction for Lagos/Portimão) → Albufeira-Ferreiras → Loulé → Faro

## Alfa Pendular vs Intercidades

**Alfa Pendular** — premium tilting train, 220 km/h, ~3h, free Wi-Fi and power at every seat, café-bar, two departures/day. Two of the daily services are through-trains from Porto.

**Intercidades** — ~3h30, one extra stop, cheaper, Wi-Fi/power more limited, café-bar, three departures/day.

First class adds legroom, wider seats and at-seat drink service for about $15-30 more each way.

## Comboios de Portugal (CP)

CP is Portugal's state-owned national rail operator, running every train on this line as well as the rest of the country's network. It traces its roots to Portugal's first railway line, opened in 1856.

## Fares & Booking

Economy: $33-40 booked 2+ months out, $50-65 booked about a week out · Business class: $68-75. Tickets open 60 days ahead on cp.pt or the free CP app, both with real-time seat selection and e-tickets. Interrail/Eurail passes accepted with seat reservation.

## Stations

**Lisboa Oriente** — Calatrava-designed Expo '98 station, Avenida Dom João II, about 20 minutes' drive from central Lisbon but well linked by Metro. Alfa Pendular trains use only Oriente; all three Intercidades trains also call at Sete Rios shortly after. Santa Apolónia, Lisbon's older terminus, isn't used for Faro trains at all — it handles northbound services to Porto instead.

**Faro** — on Largo da Estação, ~200m from the old town and Arco da Vila; ticket counter, machines, café, luggage storage. Transfer point for Olhão, Tavira and the ferry to Ilha de Faro.

## Scenic Highlights

The Tagus crossing (best photo op of the trip), the Alentejo's cork oak plains, and the Ria Formosa approach with its flamingos.

## Train vs Car vs Bus vs Flying

**Car:** ~2h40 via A2, but $25-29 in tolls plus parking, and a monotonous drive. **Bus:** Rede Expressos (~3h15, from Sete Rios) or budget FlixBus, less comfortable, sells out in summer. **Plane:** no practical direct flight for a trip this short.

## Tips

- Book early in summer — Alfa Pendular fills up.
- Allow 20-30 minutes at Lisboa Oriente to find your platform.
- Window seat: best views are the bridge crossing and the Ria Formosa approach.
- Special assistance and step-free access available at both stations; book ahead through CP.
- Faro is also a hub for Olhão, Tavira, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos, and international coaches to Seville.
